This year, I have decided to get out of my comfort zone and sew some more technical patterns. This is why I took a second look at Madeleine which I gave up on after a first disastrous try. It took me a while, I modified it quite a bit, sewn a toile but at the end, I got my perfect dress!
what is it?
The Madeleine dress is a printed pattern from the french brand République du Chiffon from its fall-winter collection 2015. I bought it when it was release and sewn it shortly after. But, when I tried it on, it was a big fail. The dress was too bid on the top, too tight at my waist. I thought for a while of alterating it but eventually, it ended up in the bin.
I hesitated a couple of time of selling the pattern but as I really like the dress, I always ended up keeping it. Good for me!
Finally, another french seamstress who is almost exactly the same height as me made Madeleine and was kind enough to share her modifications with me. That was the kick of motivation I needed. I traced again the whole pattern, modified the pieces which needed it and sew a toile which I was hoping to be wearable. Well, it was better but still not perfect.
I modified it again and finally, it was just perfect!!
The belt lands exactly at the level of my natural waist, the cross-over neckline stays flat without any additional button. No risk of revealing my bra by leaning forward.
Absolutely spot on!
what is it made of?
I used a viscose from Bennytex. I adore the print, navy blue with big flowers, I couldn’t resist. However, the quality wasn’t the greatest but the price was so cheap that I can’t complain too much.
what size is it?
I have sewn a size 36.
is it modified?
yes quite a bit to tailored it to my bodyshape. I can’t recommend enough to make a toile for this dress.
Most of my alterations were made on the bodice:
– minus 1 cm on the collar (only on the neckline side)
– minus 3 cm height on all the piece: front, back, collar
– minus 1 cm width on the front pieces only
Finally, I took off 5 cm of the back skirt.
do you like it?
I absolutely love Madeleine and I am super happy that I took the time to make it as perfect as I wanted it to be. I am really proud of it and I love wearing it!
will you make it again?
Absolutely! I already have two more ready to be sewn Stay tunned…
