Allonger la chemise du livre Escapade au Soleil

Lengthen the cover of the book Escapade au Soleil

You loved the Escapade au soleil book shirt, especially the extended dress-shirt version. To help you make one too, here's a step-by-step guide to our modifications.

Follow the guide!

WHAT MODIFICATIONS?

For this version of the shirt from the Escapade au Soleil book, we will simply lengthen the front and back patterns to create a dress pattern. We will also create slits on the sides and make a belt and belt loops.

NECESSARY MATERIALS

We lengthened our dress by 35cm. If you choose the same length:

Fabric (140cm width):
  • Sizes 34 to 58: Add 70 cm to the recommended yardage, to be adjusted if your modifications are different (You need to allow twice the fabric compared to the length you wish to add because the front and back do not fit side by side in the width).

Fusible interfacing: the yardage remains the same

Buttons:

  • 16 buttons from 9 to 12 mm for a 35cm extended version, to be adjusted if your modifications are different

THE TUTORIAL

To make these modifications, you will need the front and back patterns.

1 – Start by cutting your patterns at the “lengthen / shorten” line.

2 – Determine how many centimeters you want to lengthen your piece. Our models are designed for a height of 1m65. Lengthen your shirt pattern following the explanations in the Escapade au Soleil book on pages 28-29 by the desired length (we chose to lengthen our shirt by 35cm).

4- Cut and sew the dress following the Escapade au Soleil book tutorial up to step 4. Assemble the shoulders as normal.

5 – Mark the reference points 30cm from the bottom of the dress on each side seam.

6 – Assemble the side seams, stopping your stitch at the reference point at the bottom of the dress.

7 – Press open the seam allowances of the sides with an iron. On the unsewn parts, make a 1cm fold in line with the opening of the seam allowances to create the slit.

8 – On the unsewn parts, topstitch 5mm from the edges to hold the seam allowances in place, and thus neatly finish the slit.

9 – Finish assembling following the book's tutorial

MAKING THE BELT LOOPS AND BELT

If you already have Janie, Giverny or Gigi, you can use their belt and belt loop patterns and explanations. Otherwise, follow this step-by-step guide:

The Belt Loops

Cut 2 fabric rectangles measuring 6x4cm, fold them in half lengthwise, right sides together, and sew at 1cm.
Reduce the seam allowance to 5mm, turn right side out, and press the belt loops.
Make a 7mm fold at the top and bottom of each belt loop and sew them at the waist, stitching 2mm from the folds.
We positioned the belt loops 16cm below the sleeve, but you can adjust the measurements to your body by trying on the dress first.

The Belt

Cut 2 rectangles measuring 10x76cm, join the two rectangles right sides together along the short side. Press the seams open with an iron.
Fold the belt in half lengthwise right sides together and sew all around at 1cm from the edge, leaving a 6cm opening.
Turn the belt right side out and press it to get a nice finish. Close the opening with a few invisible hand stitches.
