We're hacking the Groovy skirt!

The timeless piece from our autumn collection?

The Groovy skirt!

It can be made in several materials, plain or patterned, but also transformable into a simpler skirt without pockets or a fly!

Today we're sharing a hack to help you easily transform your lovely skirt.

WHAT TRANSFORMATIONS?

For this version of the Groovy skirt, we opted for quilted fabric. We chose not to include pockets or a fly to create a single front piece for the skirt. We also modified the waistband and added an invisible zipper.

REQUIRED MATERIALS

To make this hack, you will need an invisible zipper at least 20cm long.

The fabric quantity is calculated based on a width of 130cm, corresponding to our quilted fabric:

For sizes 34 and 36: plan for 1.20m of fabric

For sizes 38 to 52: plan for 1.50m of fabric

THE TUTORIAL

Modify the front pattern:

For this step, you will need the front pattern of your Groovy skirt, patched pocket version, which we will modify.

Extend the center line of the skirt up to the "zipper notch"

Then remove the seam allowance from the center front: draw a parallel line 1cm from the center front and cut along this line.

The piece will be cut 1x on the fold.

Modify the waistband pattern: For this step, you will need the left front waistband pattern, which we will also modify.

Remove the 1 cm seam allowance from the center front of the left front waistband. The piece will be cut 2x on the fold.

The back waistband and back piece do not change.

THE TUTORIAL

Assembly remains the same as the tutorial, with the exception of the following steps. For these, you will need all your cut pieces and an invisible zipper.

Skirt Assembly.

1 – Sew the back darts following step 2 of the tutorial.

2 – Overlock the sides of the front and back skirt

3 – Assemble:

-the right side to the wear of the inner and outer waistbands (press seams open)

-the right side of the skirt (press seams open)

-the outer waistband to the skirt right sides together (press seams towards the waistband)

The zipper

1 – Mark the beginning of your zipper on your skirt 1cm from the top of the waistband, and the zipper stop.

2 – Mark the top of the zipper (which corresponds to the small plastic edge) and the notch indicating the bottom of the zipper on your skirt.

3 – Baste the invisible zipper to the front, right sides together, using a single-foot presser foot. Match the notches.

4 – Stop stitching at the zipper stop mark.

5 – Assemble the zipper with an invisible zipper presser foot. Backstitch at the beginning and end of the seam.

6- Repeat the operation to assemble the zipper on the back.

Waistband assembly

1 – Remove the seam allowance from the inner waistband by cutting 1cm along the entire bottom of the waistband.

2 – Overlock the bottom of the inner waistband. We chose to finish the waistband with a serged edge due to the thickness, but you can also use bias binding as explained in the tutorial.

3 – Assemble the inner waistband to the outer waistband right sides together,

stitching 1cm from the edge and following the tutorial's instructions.

4 – Understitch. (See step 18 of your tutorial)

Folding down the waistband

1 – Position the waistbands right sides together.

2 – At the zipper on the left side, stitch 1cm from the raw edges across the entire width of the waistband, backstitching at the beginning and end of the seam.

3 – Clip, turn right side out, and press the waistband.

4 – Stitch in the ditch of the waistband-to-skirt seam to hold the inner waistband in place.

To finish

1 – Finish assembling the side of the skirt to the bottom of the zipper by stitching 1cm as close as possible to the end of the zipper.

2 – If, like us, you have chosen a quilted or very thick fabric, you can choose not to hem the bottom of the skirt but to make an overlocked 3cm turn-up that you will stitch 2.5cm from the edge.

The hack is complete! We can't wait to see your brand new Groovy skirts!
