We hack the groovy skirt !

The timeless piece from our fall collection?

The Groovy skirt!

It is available in several materials, plain or not, but can also be transformed into a simpler skirt without pockets or flies!

Today we share with you a hack to allow you to simply transform your pretty skirt.

WHAT TRANSFORMATIONS?

On this version of Groovy, we opted for a quilted fabric. We chose not to make a pocket or fly in order to obtain a single piece for the front of the skirt. We also modified the waistband and added an invisible zipper.

The necessary equipment

To carry out this hack, you will need an invisible zipper with a minimum length of 20cm.

The footage is calculated on a width of 130cm corresponding to our quilting:

For sizes 34 and 36: allow 1.20m of fabric

For sizes 38 to 52: Allow 1.50m of fabric

The tuto

Modify the pattern in front:

For this step, you will need the pattern for the front of your Groovy skirt which we are going to modify.

Extend the middle line of the skirt to the “notch”

Then delete the seam allowance from the center front: draw a parallel line 1cm from the center front and cut on this line.

Modify the belt pattern: For this step, you will need the left front belt pattern which we will also modify.

Remove the 1cm seam allowance from the center front of the left front waistband.

The piece will have to be cut x2 at the fold.

The back belt and the back piece do not change.

The assembly remains that of the tutorial with the exception of the following steps. For these you will need all your cut pieces and an invisible zipper.

Assembling the skirt

1 – Make the back darts by following step no. 2 of the tutorial.

2 – Overcast the sides of the skirt at the front and back

3 – Assemble:

-the right side when worn on the interior belts and exterior belts (iron open seams)

-the right side of the skirt (iron open seams)

-the outer waistband of the skirt right sides together (iron seams lying towards the waistband)

The zipper

1 – Point on your skirt the start of your zip 1cm from the top of the belt, and the stop of your zip.

2 – Point out the top of the zip on your skirt (it corresponds to the small plastic edge) and the notch which indicates the bottom of the zip.

3 – Glaze the invisible zipper right sides together using a presser foot on one branch. Match the notches.

4 – Stop the stitching at the closing stop point.

5 – Assemble the closure with a presser foot for installing invisible closures. Make a locking stitch at the start and end of the seam.

Belt assembly

1 – Remove the seam allowance from the inner waistband by cutting 1cm all along the bottom of the waistband.

2 – Overcast the bottom of the inner waistband. We chose to finish the belt with an overlock because of the thicknesses but you can very well apply a bias binding as explained in the tutorial.

3 – Assemble the inner belt to the outer belt right sides together by sewing at 1cm and following the explanations in the tutorial.

4 – Make an understitch. (See step 18 of your tutorial)

Fold down the belt

1 – Position the belts right sides together.

2 – At the closure on the left side, sew 1cm from the raw edges across the entire width of the belt, making a bartack at the start and end of the seam.

3 – Notch, turn and iron the belt.

4 – Stitch in the groove of the joining seam of the belt and the skirt to hold the inner belt in place.

To finish

1 – Finish assembling the side of the skirt by stitching 1cm as close as possible to the end of the zip

2 – If, like us, you have chosen a quilted or very thick fabric, you can choose not to hem the bottom of the skirt but to make a 3cm overcast fill which you will stitch 2.5cm from the edge.

The hack is complete! We can’t wait to discover your brand new Groovy skirts!
